Healthy Hair, Naturally: Essential Oils for Healthy Hair Growth

Welcome, Elliott yogis, to this inspiring and informative blog focusing on essential oils for healthy hair growth. We are especially excited to share insights from our friends over at Hairguard, who have scientifically explored the use of peppermint oil for hair loss.

If you suffer from the effects of hair loss or wish you could improve the health of your hair then this blog is for you!

Hair issues can be more than just a physical concern; it often has a profound emotional and psychological impact on individuals. For many, hair is closely tied to self-image, identity, and confidence. Experiencing hair loss can lead to feelings of insecurity, self-consciousness, and even depression. It may affect social interactions, relationships, and daily activities, causing withdrawal from social situations.

Talking from my own personal experience whist going through IVF treatment, I encountered noticeable hair loss, a concern compounded by my already thin hair as a 39-year-old woman. I remember the unsettling sight of hair strands accumulating in my brush after fixing my hair or washing my hair and finding lots of strands in my hands. While I understood that hormonal changes due to fertility drugs could contribute to this, my usual go-to solution of using essential oils to strengthen my hair was not advisable during IVF due to concerns about potential interactions with the medications.

Thankfully, my IVF journey has finished, allowing me to use my aromatherapy expertise to nourish my hair in a healthy, natural way. We are currently developing our own line of (SLS-free) hair care products under the 'Aromatic Yogi' brand. Our range includes shampoo, conditioner, and Hair revival oil, designed to promote healthy hair and educate people on the benefits of using essential oils for overall wellness. I love the results and appreciate the 'MIX IT UP' capabilities that offers flexibility to tailor my hair care routine to suit my mood and align with the hormonal fluctuations throughout my monthly cycle.

We have received amazing feedback from hair dressers and customers regarding our Root Revive Rosemary Hair Oil ❤️

Essential oils offer a gentle and effective way to support hair health, allowing you to embrace your natural beauty with confidence and pride. The simple act of incorporating these aromatic wonders into your hair care routine can elevate your daily rituals, turning them into moments of self-care and indulgence.

LETS LOOK AT PEPPERMINT

Peppermint Oil: Supported Hair Growth Aid

Peppermint oil, derived from a hybrid of spearmint and watermint, is gaining recognition beyond its aromatic qualities. Scientific studies suggest that it offers several potential benefits for hair growth:

  1. Stimulation of the Anagen Growth Phase: Research indicates that peppermint oil may stimulate the anagen or growth phase of hair follicles, potentially leading to thicker, longer hair strands.

  2. Improvements in Blood Supply: Better blood circulation to the scalp is crucial for a healthy hair environment, and peppermint oil has shown promise in promoting this circulation.

  3. Anti-fungal and Anti-bacterial Properties: The natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties of peppermint oil can help maintain a healthy scalp, reducing the risk of issues that can hinder hair growth.

  4. Anti-inflammatory Properties: Scalp inflammation can be detrimental to hair health, and peppermint oil's anti-inflammatory properties may help create a more conducive environment for hair growth.

Our friends over at Hairguard have composed their own blog post titled:

Peppermint Oil For Hair Loss – Does It Really Help? you can check out the full post here

A little extract from the post:

Peppermint has been shown effective in relieving hot flashes in women, reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, and decreasing nausea. Due to its cooling effect, it is used commonly in the temporary treatment of muscle and nerve pain, as well as in the relief of itching. In addition, its aroma is frequently used to induce alertness.

There is no doubt that Peppermint Essential Oil is a highly versatile ingredient. But where does it stand when it comes to treating hereditary baldness?

As will be discussed further below, Peppermint Essential Oil has a variety of properties that make it an excellent addition to anyone’s hair regrowth routine.

This article will highlight four main properties of PEO that help in the regrowth of hair, including:

  1. Stimulation of the anagen growth phase;

  2. Improvements in blood supply;

  3. Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties; and

  4. Anti-inflammatory properties.

The Oxygen-Hair Loss Connection

Peppermint oil can increase blood flow when applied topically. As such, it also increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients.

Oxygen, as it does in all other organs, plays a crucial role in the hair follicle. It not only keeps it alive, but it also provides the scalp with circumstances necessary to thrive. Let me explain.

When testosterone is produced in the prostate, it does not stay there. Instead, it travels to various parts of the body (including the scalp and hair follicles). This is known as Free Testosterone (fT).

When fT makes its way to the scalp, it meets another substance – 5AR. If the circumstances are right, as they often are, this interaction will result in the production of DHT. While this is okay for individuals without Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), it can lead to inflammation and miniaturization in those with the condition.

Oxygen plays a role in the scalp’s environment. In short, a low-oxygen environment will contribute to the production of DHT. This is because very little oxygen is needed for the exchange.

If you have AGA, this will only continue the cycle. The presence of DHT = miniaturization = less blood flow and poor oxygen levels = hair loss. However, you can increase the oxygen levels (with natural extracts such as peppermint oil) to create a different outcome.

This outcome, another by-product of fT and 5AR is estriadiol, an estrogen steroid hormone that has been shown to induce hair growth. By increasing oxygen levels, then, you will see a decrease in DHT production and an increase in estradiol.
