Alternative nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhona) is one of our favourite breathing exercises to quiet the mind, reduce stress and make meditation easier.
Subtle energy clearing breathing technique
Alternate Nostril Breathing helps calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and bring a feeling of relaxation to the entire body. It also relaxes the mind in preparation for meditation, which can be helpful for those struggling to settle down.
When performed for just a few minutes, Alternate Nostril Breathing can instantly reduce stress and fatigue, and is a quick and efficient practice to do before high-stress situations such as job interviews and public speaking engagements.
In Sanskrit, Alternate Nostril Breathing is called Nadi Shodhana Pranayama, which translates to “subtle energy clearing breathing technique”, and it has many benefits.
Alternate Nostril Breathing helps:
Calm the mind
Relax the mind and body in preparation for meditation
Helps open the passage at the nostrils
Purifies nadis (channels) by keeping the passage clear of dust and allergies.
Provide fresh oxygen to the blood stream, which further helps to build energy keeping the body fresh.
Bring balance to both sides of the brain (helps to balance the logical side of the brain and the emotional side of the brain)
In Yoga, the Ida(left) and the Pingala(right) which form part of the Sushumna Nadi are balanced with the practice of Nadi Shodhana which benefits the practitioner to remain stable with focus leading to the path of spiritual progress.
As most pranayama practices helps to bring balance to the chakras, Nadi Shodhana focuses more towards the Muladhara Chakra (Root). Helps in digestion when done along with various yoga poses.
Try it now:
1. Sit in a comfortable seated position 2. With the Right hand fold the middle and the index finger towards the palm. Place the thumb at the soft part of the Right nostril and the ring and little finger at the soft part of the Left nostril without closing the passage at the nostrils. 4. Use the thumb for the Right nostril and the ring finger of the Left nostril.
5. gently press closed the right nostril and breathe in through the left.
6. Close the left and breathe out the right - breathe in the right close and breathe out the left. 5. Continue Inhaling and exhaling deeply through alternate nostrils. 6. Repeat for 10 times.
